Train Siege Ends After 30 Hours Of Hostage Crisis

The Jaffar Express, carrying 440 passengers, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar when members of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) derailed and hijacked the train. The incident occurred near the mountainous terrain of Gudalar and Piru Kunri, approximately 160 kilometers from Quetta. The rebels used explosives to derail the train and held the passengers hostage for 30 hours.

The Rescue Operation

On Wednesday, the Pakistani army confirmed the conclusion of the 30-hour-long operation. The military’s statement revealed that 21 civilians and four security personnel lost their lives during the standoff. All 33 rebels, including suicide bombers, were killed in the operation.

The security forces faced significant challenges as the rebels used the hostages as human shields. According to Army spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, the rescue operation was carried out with extreme precision and caution to avoid civilian casualties. Snipers eliminated the suicide bombers before the forces cleared each train compartment.

The Pakistani military stated that intelligence reports confirmed the attack was orchestrated by terrorist leaders operating from Afghanistan. BLA’s Demands and Threats

The BLA, the most powerful rebel group active in Balochistan, demanded the release of Baloch political prisoners, activists, and missing individuals they claimed were abducted by the Pakistani military. The group threatened to start executing hostages if their 48-hour deadline was not met. Before the army’s announcement, the BLA claimed to have killed 50 passengers.

Muhammad Bilal, a passenger traveling with his mother, described walking for hours through mountainous terrain to reach safety, stating, “I can’t find the words to describe how we managed to escape. It was terrifying.”
