China’s Ministry of Finance has declared a sharp escalation in its trade retaliation against the United States, announcing an 84% tariff on American imports. To hedge against these risks, Fuling opened a new factory in Indonesia last year. Yet, even this strategic move has been compromised. Trump’s latest tariff package also targets Indonesian exports, subjecting them to a 32% levy—complicating China’s efforts to bypass restrictions by shifting production to Southeast Asia.

The new tariffs aren’t limited to China. Countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand—nations that have absorbed Chinese manufacturing due to earlier trade tensions—have also been hit. Cambodia faces a 49% tariff, Vietnam 46%, and Thailand 36%.

Trump justified the sweeping tariffs by claiming they would revitalize the American economy. But economists are raising alarm bells, warning that such measures could trigger both a U.S. and global recession. The ripple effect is already being felt across markets, and even among Trump’s own supporters, including billionaire Elon Musk, who voiced criticism over the trade war’s potential fallout.

The manager of a Tianjin-based freight company said the tariffs have been a major disruption. “We’re trying to negotiate cost-sharing with our American partners,” he explained. “But every case is different, and overall, the damage is substantial.”

Another freight executive, Wu Changchun of Maritima Maruba, which operates routes between China and Cambodia, confirmed that trade volumes are already declining. Several construction projects in Cambodia have also been halted due to tariff-induced cost spikes.

“At 10% or 20%, we might still manage with leaner margins and smarter supply chains,” Wu said. “But 104% is beyond what businesses can absorb. There’s no way to trade that off.”

U.S.-China Diplomatic Silence

The strain isn’t just economic—it’s diplomatic. Despite the magnitude of the situation, Trump has not reached out to Chinese President Xi Jinping since his return to the White House. Meanwhile, Beijing has kept the door open for talks, though meaningful dialogue appears distant.

Signed by Chair Alvin Liu and President Michael Hart, the message described the tariffs as “unprecedented” and warned that the current upheaval is unlikely to serve the long-term interests of either country—or their consumers.

“This level of disruption is without modern precedent,” the note stated. “And it remains unclear how this benefits anyone, economically or politically.”

Analysts argue that China may need to undergo deeper economic restructuring, reducing its reliance on exports and bolstering domestic consumption. But doing so will take time—and may be insufficient in the face of such aggressive external pressure.
